19 Oct 07 - Fergs Kayaks helping in Fiji: Fergs Kayaks are proud to be supporting a building project in Fiji for The Happy Home Orphanage and under privileged children at The Happy School. Currently this project is seeing playgrounds built in both locations where before there was very minimal equipment for the children to play with. Not only are these playgrounds going to provide hours of fun for the children but they will be used by the teachers in some of their charges rehabilitation. Sujit Kumar is one such person who will benefit from this. [more]

23 Jun 07 - Islands' shameful secret: No one is starving here, is the familiar but uncertain catchcry of Fiji's blue-collar workers. Judging by the empty gin bottle outside a corrugated iron shack in one of many squatter communities, or the subwoofer-boasting stereo sitting under the rusty tin roof, they may just be right. But poverty in Fiji relates not only to food but to social conditions and the biggest impact is on children at the bottom of the social hierarchy, many living in sharp contrast to the exuberance of the beaming children seen in tourism promotions. 27 Apr 07 - IFCR Welcomes Fiji: Warwick Pleass, District 9920 Governor chose Suva in Fiji as the site for his 2007 Conference. He had recognised the youthful qualities of some Fijian Rotary clubs and invited representatives of IFCR to organise a conference event to launch the Fiji branch of the fellowship...... During the conference week the visitors learnt of the existence of the Happy Home, an institution supported strongly by the Rotary Club of Suva with their RC of Suva Sujit Foundation. The genesis of this project was the discovery of Sujit Kumar who had been abused, traumatised and living in distressing circumstances for many years. The Happy Home was set up to accommodate Sujit and others from similar backgrounds so that they would no longer live in such an unhappy way. The Sujit Foundation was to be the vehicle for the Rotary club’s support.

13 Apr 07 - Sujit on track to recovery: Happy Home resident Sujit Kumar has returned from Australia on a medical trip with the hope of improving his condition. Sujit captured the media's attention after he was found in a coop with chickens under his Waidalice home in Tailevu. Rotary Club of Suva Sujit Foundation said Sujit completed a range of tests and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans in Brisbane to determine the exact nature of any brain damage possibly afflicting him. 05 Apr 07 - Helping Sujit the 'chicken boy': We first introduced you to Sujit Kumar one year ago. He has since become known to millions around the world as "the chicken boy". As a baby in Fiji, Sujit was orphaned and then left in a chicken coop to fend for him. He is a so-called "wild child", a human with all the traits of an animal. Now, Sujit has a second chance at life, thanks to Australian widow Elizabeth Clayton, who has devoted herself to helping him. [more]

20 Mar 07 - Test case for humanity: It was a simple question, but with a very complex answer. The Year 7 lad looked past Sujit Kumar's darting eyes and asked if the jockey-sized 34-year-old – who grew up with the tag of "chicken boy" – would ever be able to speak. Elizabeth Clayton, the woman credited with saving Sujit from his wretched life of abuse, received the question in her usual spot: right by his side. "I hope so," she answered. [more]

20 Feb 07 - The Good Mail, Rotary Club of West Brisbane Daybreak Inc: One of the great things about being a Rotary Club member is that we get the chance to become involved in experiences that we would never have had in our normal day to day lives. One such experience was through my membership of the Rotary Club of West Brisbane Daybreak and the association with our sister club, the Rotary Club of Suva in Fiji. During a business trip to Fiji in early 2003 I was invited by Elizabeth Clayton, the President of the Rotary Club of Suva, to visit the Samabula Old Peoples Home which our Brisbane club was helping to support. During the visit I met Sujit for the first time and was stunned when told of his history. [more] [or take me to the full Newsletter]

20 Jan 07 - The story of the Mowgli girl: Pitiful grunts and squeals of anguish come from the wild creature caught in the jungle of Cambodia.... This story echoes the tale of Sujit Kumar in Fiji: Locked in a chicken coop shortly after his birth in 1973 and found at the age of eight after his father died. He was tied to a bed for the next 21 years because of his unpredictable behaviour. [more]
